Almost by accident, I was in the Garah area when I received the call from Helen asking if I’d have time / interest in creating some artwork about the house and shearing shed at “Welbon”. I was thrilled at the chance to make some paintings about this quite famous house and its shearing shed that had served this family for 100 years.
If there was to be an overarching story about this shed (and the other three that I saw on this extended trip that included a shed in Surat, and another in Cunnamulla), it would be that of The Last Shearing. This shed was still in use when I visited, but the new owners will make their own decisions about land-and-shed use. For this family, the last shearing has happened, but the beauty of the architecture of both the shed and the house will be a lasting legacy to the family who have been its custodians for this last century.
My thanks to Chris and Helen Carrigan for sharing this moment in the family history with me. It’s a very great honour.

I use these small works as a way to further understand how this particular shed is put together. If I try to launch straight into the “major” works I end up making architectural and factual mistakes that take away from the intregity of what is a site-based practice.
All sheds are basically the same: sheep come in one end, woolly, and go out the other end smooth. Sometimes sheds are built in the same district in the same time period, or by the same builder. But even these sheds have differences that decades of different owners over lay them.
