...where time is recorded in the lines drawn in sketchbooks, and on the backs of envelopes.

A series of small plein air sketches created by Christine Porter between Dec 2024 and July 2026.  Of and around the  landscape of the Macleay Valley, on the NSW mid-north coast, these began as a family holiday activity and ended as a serious discussion about the role of sketches, and sketching, in what had been, up until now, this artist’s mainly studio practice.

The Story

This is an ongoing project that began as a way to keep my aging mother entertained.  I was doing a lot of plein air and one day I asked her if she wanted to tag along. She brought her sudoku, but out of the corner of my eye I saw her scribbling a drawing in the margins. She’d always been sporty, and as her athleticism changed, it kept that formerly very active woman engaged, and me calm.

She and I would regularly “go out to do a bit of sketching”.  It was a game of active stillness. Often with thermos and sandwiches. Always with a view. Even though the resultant collection is of the landscapes of my childhood, this project is more about the accumulated episodes of peaceful companionship, where time is recorded in the lines on sketchbook pages, and the backs of envelopes.

About the Artwork

Work in this series is either pen and ink, pure watercololour, or a mixture of both. and watercolour. There is the occasional use of body colour. None are larger than 18x13cm.
I wanted to think more about the process being about being present, rather than making work for exhibition. I made the envelopes from 185gsm watercolour paper, in various sizes to explore that idea of "scribbling something on the back of an envelope"
Saying that, some work from this series was completed on sketchbook paper, and envelopes. Unless described otherwise, most work is on proper watercolour paper.
The first 18 pieces framed for Texas are presented in these small box frames. Later work will be in other frames, of a similar style. In future, some work will be presented unframed.
