Believing Facebook. If a painting wins a prize, and no-one notices, has it still won?

It’s not that I don’t believe everything I read on Facebook, but it was only when I received the cheque and the award that I could believe that the painting “Hope” had indeed won the Best Overall Entry – The Stockwell Weber Foundation Award-  at the Heartland Festival in Blackall last month.

I was thrilled to bits with this win; it was a painting from north of there, and seemed to say so much about what was on everyone’s minds when I’d been in the area earlier in the year.

Thanks to Boyd and the committee who have organised this exhibition for so many years now. In fact, Boyd told me that as he was speaking at the opening, in his role as curator, he noticed one of my early paintings that had been acquired by the council years before, from this very same exhibition. I love this part of my practice.
