Christine is a former primary school teacher – a long time ago, before she became a full time artist. She is happy to work with small groups, or individuals, or come to your school and develop a program to suit your school. The STEP AWAY program, introduced in November 2022, will be taught again early 2023. Contact Christine to be on the wait list for next year. Likewise contact her to book your child in for one-one-one classes.
This is a 5 week series of activities that takes a child, and their caregiver, out into the field to paint and draw. It is as much about training the parent in how to support their young creative, as it is about doing the activity. Literally stepping away from the screen, this is a lovely way to spend some time with your child, and to nurture your inner artistic child too, especially if you were part of the generation that experienced competition and judgement as part of your art education.
Each session will be 1 hour – 1.5 hours
4 -5.30pm, Saturday afternoons – starting date to be advised
Various venues depending on the weather, and the subject for that week. First venue will be Robinson’s Lookout in East Lismore, or the river boat-ramp picnic area.
Topics will include : how to start, what to bring, perspective, colour mixing, drawing what is in front of us, others as will arise.
Teaching strategies will include explanation and demonstration, but most importantly: creating achievable aims for both the adults and children, and addressing needs
Cost: $100 per child, for all five sessions. Parents participate for free.
OR USE YOUR $100 CREATIVE KIDS VOUCHER
If you only want to book for a few of the workshops, cost will be $30 per child.
Parents must accompany their child, but may bring up to 2 children with them.
Primary school age children only – and probably from age 9+
Choose to come to all 5 sessions, or nominate your date of choice.
With a maximum of four adults + Christine, in each group, the learning will stay personal.
A materials list will be provided each week, very basic. However if you are a disorganised family, Christine will have anything needed for the activity for purchase at cost price (never more than $5)
PAYMENTS AND VOUCHERS

Christine explains how the program came about, and what you can expect to achieve with it.
The Step Away program can be tweaked to suit high school aged children, however if your teenager is interested in art, either as a subject at school, or just as an interest, Christine can support that. Lessons are after school, at her studio in East Lismore, or at your home. Topics are student generated, and co-ordination can me done with your art-teacher. Painting, printmaking or drawing have been popular.
Lessons take an hour.
COST $50 per session if you come to her studio. If there are two students interested in the same time slot, the price reduces to $45 per person, $40 for three students. If Christine travels to your home, the cost is $60 per session, $50 per person if two students, $45 if three.
Materials are supplied by the student, or can be purchased from Christine at cost.

THE ART BIRD PROJECT
This is a whole-school, multi-day, printmaking workshop. Suiting small schools of 1-2 teachers, it includes working with the adults in the school community, training them up in the sort of language and skills that supported emerging creatives, then taking those adults and working with the upper and lower school groups. It ties in with science topics, and can be extended to making artist books before and after Christine’s visit.
Christine is a trained primary school teacher. (Armidale CAE)
She only spent a few years in the classroom, leaving to concentrate on her own painting and printmaking practice. However an important element of this practice continues to include teaching both with adults and children in general art activities, painting, drawing and printmaking.
More about her art experience and successes here.
Her teaching policy, and teaching methods, are based around these three precepts:
– The teacher is responsible for adjusting her teaching style to the learning style to the student.
– The vocabulary of judgement and criticism has no place in an emerging artists practice
– The provision of a framework for skills development is an important part of developing creativity.
