Last week I delivered a series of paintings to a family near Armidale who were about to celebrate 100 years of being on that place. It was the culmination, for me, of four months of solid painting, following a week last winter drawing and painting on-site. I left the series for the whole extended family to look at as part of the weekend festivities, but part of me was there with them. It’s always an honour when a family chooses me to create artwork about such a personal subject as their home, and these people made me feel so welcome. They told me after the weekend of celebration that the paintings were hugely admired, but it’s the story of a great-uncle I liked the most. He’s the last one of his generation, and had grown up there. When he saw the work he pulled up a chair and sat and sat and looked and looked. I wish I could have been there to talk with him about what it had been like in the olden days but I’m so pleased that I was able to contribute to his day. Christine Porter, Lismore, April 2014
